Cardiac Invasion

A flock of starlings
Moves like a wave
Settling in the trees
Then swelling in unison
They swirl with the breeze

Their expanding and contracting
Draws my attention upward
With the backdrop of blue skies
Throbs the avian arrhythmia
I cannot avert my eyes

Like an animated Seurat painting
The black birds give shape to the wind
Their cooperative performance
And ominous power on display
As they move in dissonant conformance

The invasion intensifies
The noise of the birds
Drowning out my own thoughts
What at first seemed beautiful
Is the most sinister of plots
