He made me believe I was a sad little bird
With broken wings
Ugly feathers
I couldn’t sing
He kicked me and I stumbled off a cliff
Instinctively, I began to fly!
I didn’t fall
Nor did I die
It was he who flapped his wings
And didn’t rise–
He couldn’t fly
To my surprise
The wind caught my feathers
I glided higher
Elated, I realized
I was a damned good flyer
I sang a song
My first in a while
My friends began to dance
And encouraged me with a smile
