We Run Together

Nocturnal migrants

We fall in line

Beneath a silver moon

And black autumn skies

A cacophony of encouraging cheers

Fills the quiet night

Skipping echoes across the water

Like smooth, flat stones

Our cooperative push-pull

Produces a slipstream

Wing power and willpower

Propel us through the crisp air

The strongest leads in front:

We each take our turns

Relying on one another

We’ll be able to go the distance

Like a skein,

We thread along

the meandering line

of single track

We are geese

We are runners

Migrating

Transmigrating

Soaring to the finish line
